Opinion | Fixing the Quality Problems at Boeing
  + stars: | 2024-04-10 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “‘Shortcuts’ Paint a Picture of Boeing Ceding Quality” (front page, March 31):The sad story of Boeing unfortunately seems to be a metaphor for this country. Boeing — before being taken over by management brought in through the McDonnell Douglas acquisition in 1997 — was by far the best plane maker in the world. But new management in the post-merger period stressed return on investment and profitability rather than engineering and quality, and the company’s culture shifted over time. To the Editor:Re “Boeing Chief to Resign in a Major Reshuffle” (Business, March 26):Boeing’s latest leadership overhaul will achieve the necessary results only if the company does the hard work of changing its culture as well. For years, Boeing has been plagued by a culture that has been described as “broken,” “sick” and filled with “secrecy and intimidation.” Employees were notoriously afraid to speak out about problems they saw internally.

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) — Twenty people were rescued from an ice floe in Lake Erie, the Coast Guard said Monday. The Coast Guard's Ninth District Great Lakes station said it received a report about 10:20 a.m. that the people were stuck on a mile-long floe about a half-mile off Catawba Island State Park near Port Clinton in Ohio. A Coast Guard helicopter was sent from Air Station Detroit and two airboats headed to the scene from nearby Station Marblehead, said Petty Officer Jessica Fontenette. Rescuers from the Put-In-Bay fire department on South Bass Island and the Ottawa County sheriff's office also assisted. The Coast Guard was able to rescue nine people; four others were rescued by the other agencies; and seven were able to get to shore themselves on an airboat, she said.

So they began casually looking at houses outside the city, just to get a feel for the market. Once they visited an oceanfront house in Marblehead, Mass., however, things began moving quickly. “We weren’t really looking. We were supposed to be educating ourselves,” said David, 45, who previously worked for tech start-ups but is now focused on raising their children. They also liked the quiet residential neighborhood, where they could imagine their children riding bicycles without having to worry about traffic.

Opinion | Are Biofuels Bad for the Environment?
  + stars: | 2023-06-25 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “A Climate Solution That’s Bad for the Climate,” by Michael Grunwald (Opinion guest essay, June 12):Mr. Grunwald stresses that “corn ethanol and soy biodiesel accelerate food inflation and global hunger” and points out that their production uses up a lot of land. It also uses an inordinate amount of water, which is scarce! Any effort to improve our climate that ignores population growth is looking at only one side of the equation. To the Editor:Michael Grunwald, not today’s farmers, seems mired in the “horse-and-buggy era” of agriculture. Today’s farmers use cutting-edge practices to grow more on less land with fewer resources.

Will Ripped Jeans Ever Go Out of Style?
  + stars: | 2023-05-29 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I am perplexed by the ripped jeans looks. And if not, how do you wear ripped jeans with style?— Connie, Marblehead, Mass. The retailers sent the jeans back. That was 40 years ago, and, as Mr. Martens pointed out, distressed styles have helped power Diesel’s parent company to revenues of more than a billion euros last year. Mr. Bravado and Ms. D’Amore believe such one-off distressed jeans have reached the status of “timeless,” like the white shirt.
She also says you shouldn't let rising interest rates hold you back from buying. When Dana Bull bought her first property in June 2012, she wasn't intending on becoming a real estate investor. Even though everybody was talking about how scary buying real estate was, it didn't really seem to impact me. Today, the 33-year-old real estate investor and agent owns 22 rental units around Salem and Marblehead, two coastal towns north of Boston. Don't let today's interest rates hold you back from buyingSure, interest rates aren't what they were in 2020 and 2021, when they plummeted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and even dipped below 3% to record lows.
